About Hurricane Creek Wilderness

Hurricane Creek Wilderness is a federally designated wilderness area located in the William B. Bankhead National Forest in northwestern Alabama. Covering more than 15,000 acres, it features steep terrain shaped by Hurricane Creek and its tributaries, which carve deep ravines and narrow valleys through the landscape. The wilderness comprises mixed hardwood forests dominated by oak, hickory, and pine species, providing habitat for diverse wildlife including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, black bear, and numerous bird species. Established in 1984, the Hurricane Creek Wilderness protects one of the most remote and undeveloped areas in Alabama, preserving its natural state without the impact of roads or mechanized vehicles. Visitors can enjoy activities such as hiking, backpacking, wildlife observation, and fishing in the clear, cold waters of Hurricane Creek. The trail system here is limited but challenging, often requiring navigation through rugged terrain and steep inclines. Waterfalls, dense rhododendron thickets, and scenic overlooks contribute to the wilderness experience. The area is valued for its ecological significance and as a quiet refuge for backcountry recreation. Its relative remoteness and lack of facilities make it best suited for experienced wilderness travelers seeking solitude and a primitive outdoor experience. Nearby landmarks include the Sipsey Fork Wild and Scenic River, enhancing the region’s reputation as a prime natural destination in Alabama’s Appalachian foothills.
